Ghana's pineapple export industry is built around the Sea-Freight Pineapple Exporters of Ghana (SPEG), a cooperative of 27 producers and exporters that together ship approximately 30,000 tonnes of fresh pineapples per year to European markets. SPEG was founded in 1994 and has been instrumental in Ghana's successful transition from the Smooth Cayenne variety to the MD2 (Sweet Gold) variety now demanded by all major European supermarket chains.
SPEG provides its members with collective GlobalG.A.P. certification support, shared shipping logistics through reefer vessels from Tema Port, quality control infrastructure, and direct market linkages to European importers. SPEG-member pineapples are sold into Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, and the UK year-round, with the strongest production season running from February to August.
Independent from SPEG, several individual pineapple producers also export directly, particularly through air freight for premium-quality smaller volumes to speciality retailers and foodservice buyers.

The association exports high-quality fresh vegetables to the UK, Germany, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Dubai year-round. VEPEAG provides market linkage services, price information, and logistics support to its member exporters.
Srighan Farms has risen to become one of Ghana's leading private exporters of fresh agricultural products, ranking among the top three vegetable, yam, and coconut exporters in the country. The company is a vertically integrated operation — grower, packer, exporter, and distributor — supplying UK, France, Canada, and USA markets directly. The business has been in operation for over 25 years and operates an out-grower model that provides income opportunities to smallholder farmers across Ghana while maintaining consistent export-quality supply.
Bomarts has earned recognition across Europe and the Middle East for quality tropical fruits, including pineapples, mangoes, and papayas sourced from their own integrated farming operations in Ghana. The company emphasises sustainable development, value addition, and multiple certifications. Bomarts temporarily suspended EU supply programmes during the establishment of a new dry processing facility and has announced plans to resume EU supply. The company's integrated farming model — from own farms through processing to export — provides buyers with strong traceability from farm to shipment.
GROCTEU is the apex body for yam exporters in Ghana, registered in 2001. The Ministry of Trade and Industry appointed GROCTEU to set up and manage the National Yam Pack House — the single required corridor for the inspection of all yam sea shipments by regulatory agencies and customs. This centralised pack house system ensures that all exported Ghanaian yams meet phytosanitary standards before shipment, making GROCTEU-member exports significantly lower risk for European and North American importers than non-member yam supply.
Ghana is the world's second-largest cocoa producer after Côte d'Ivoire, and cocoa is the backbone of Ghana's agricultural export economy. The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) regulates every stage of the cocoa supply chain — from farm quality through to export — and is internationally recognised for the quality standards it enforces.
For EU-bound cocoa, the most significant compliance development is the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which requires that cocoa exported to the EU is traceable to the specific farm plots where it was grown, with GPS geolocation data confirming no deforestation on that land since December 31, 2020.
